On the topic of things I *do* expect to rock:

They've put the cover of the next Harry Dresden up, and is it just me or is he holding Amoracchius?

ETA: Comments may contain spoilers for recent books, just in case you're reading or thinking of reading.

DUUUUUUDE. I need to finish rereading; I've read them all, but my brain's still stuck somewhere around Summer Knight.

I actually get weirdly gushy about this series, since the last couple of books. He's grown amazingly as a writer, which is actually something of a serious problem, because I have to start my recommendations these days with, "Okay, you're just going to want to skip Storm Front. Fool Moon and Grave Peril are both pretty weak, too. It really picks up in Summer Knight, not at all coincidentally around the time Harry stops being such a jerkface to Murphy and starts telling her things instead of "protecting" her by eternally keeping her out of the loop...."

Now, granted, the character growth is part of why I love the series, but it does make those first three really hard to get through.

I find I still like the first three because they're like teenage-written Raymond Chandler fanfic, and they amuse the crap out of me.

Have you heard how they came about? It sort of explains a lot--Butcher didn't actually want to be writing them, and I think that shows.

I kind of feel pity for him. He makes this comment in his Inevitable Back of the Book Codex Alexa Pimping about how he spent years trying to write classic fantasy and seemed to have little talent for it, and I've got friends who have that sort of problem, too. It always sucks when the thing you have the greatest passion for is the thing you kind of blow at.

Yeah, I do feel a bit bad for him for that. (And I have a friend who tried to read the Codex Alexa stuff and said they were awful. Poor guy. But, well, Harry's *great,* so.)

I don't know if I'd call them awful, although I never did get through the first book. It was just... boring. And that sort of "oh gee" feeling that happens a lot in Harry Dresden worked atrociously with it. I mean, you can do that and still have it turn out half-decently--David Eddings made a career that way--but not in the sort of story he was trying to write.

It could be. It could also be a reference to the Warden's swords since Harry is the only major Warden without a sword.

*does not start on speculaty goodness*

I've always wondered if he was doing that so Harry could wind up with one of the Three, actually. (And given that he prefers a swordcane, I spent a lot of time staring at Fidelacchius suspiciously, until last book. Admittedly, Murph was always an equal possibility.)

OMG WANTTT

I too was wondering if Murph or one of the cops gets the sword. I also admit to entertaining speculation about Thomas (I know, vampire. But they make a point of telling us that Thomas is not bothered by holy objects, and hey, they had an atheist wielding one)

but the books do seem to be setting up Murph for some sort of crusade - i mean, the descriptions of her when Harry looks on her with his Sight are steeped with initiate!knight symbolism...

wantwantwantwant. i also want the comic book thingy that's coming out soonish too. nom nom nom...

(don't mind bob in the icon, he's just jealous that he's disembodied in the books!)

I'm worried about that comic. It's being done by Dabel Bros, also known as the people who did Guilty Pleasures, and admittedly that gave us mocking material for the next eight internet generations, but doesn't exactly stand out on a resume.

Isn't it out already in the US?

I don't know much about the comic. I'm also in the wrong hemisphere to ask about US release dates :)

I don't think Harry will be getting one of them, considering the pseudo-Arthurian I'm seeing in the whole thing.

What I think they're doing by waiting for Harry getting a sword is for Chastity to step up, since she still has SOME kind of power and she's a smithy.

...then again, I have this bizarre, sinking suspicion that Marcone is going to get one of them, so I'm an odd one to ask ^_^

That actually seems to be a pretty popular theory--or at least I've run into it before, and frankly I'm afraid to look into the fandom. (If nothing else, the bog-standard fannish misogyny would probably make me want to kill something.)

I have wondered about Charity, though--not her making him something magical herself, because I think that there is a pretty solid argument for power not used fading away, but them doing something in partnership, with Harry or otherwise. Or maybe even... Hm. You know, Molly's supposed to be really good with subtle magic, her mom knows smithing, and they've got this vacancy re: making magic swords...
