Also, Kings

I would dearly love to know what it is so much of my friendslist sees in this, because I'm annoyed by the Smallville-esque 'subtleties', the way canonical homosexual is evil in the first episode (and I must agree: what freaking version of Jonathan and David have these people been reading?), and the fact that King Silas is 'evil' pretty much "because God said so". I may continue watching because I love Ian McShane like a deeply loving thing, but this is rather not what I was expecting.

What I see in it is the hope that it might do something really cool with a story and mythology I've always loved. It has exactly two more episodes to prove to me that it's not Anvil Heavy with its imagery and cliches.

I can see that: it does have some interesting potential, and pilots can be rougher than series. What really confuses me are the people who aren't excited for the potential but seem to think that first episode already was a brilliant masterpiece of anvil-free subtlety; my livingroom flooring would like to lodge a protest to that. (azarias mostly said what I was thinking here.)

No, I apologize and take that back. What confuses me most of all are the people talking about the wonderful gay, since this is by far the least homoerotic version of David and Jonathan I've ever even heard of, including the one I've read where they were both djinns and David fell in love with a human woman and picked her over Jonathan and Jonathan tried to destroy the world as a result.

I don't even know what to say to that. I'm not a shipper or a slasher--I don't by inclination slash or ship characters who aren't canon, almost ever.

And yet--for as long as I can remember, Jonathan and David have been my canon OTP. It doesn't get more canon than David and Jonathan! It just doesn't!

And one of the things that's really pissing me off about Kings is The Evil Gay. That they are doing it All Wrong. This is the worst gay I have ever seen, and it is contaminating my one true canon gay pairing.

The more I think about that, the more it bothers me, too. And I'm also at the point with this latest episode where... if I'm supposed to be rooting for David over Jack, they're boned, because I'm rooting for Jack all the way. Why? Because Jack is an actual person. David is a freakin' Ken Doll. He's a paint-by-numbers hero and they're making him worse, not better.

So far, Evil Homo Jack has a posse of men willing to die for him. David doesn't. This is going to turn out very interesting, if they play David's ability to inspire against Evil Homo Jack's ability to earn and command loyalty.

... or it could turn out to be BUTTERFLIES BUTTERFLIES FOLLOW THE BUTTERFLIES LALALALALA.
