catalase up-page gives a better example what I mean by plot gimmick, and the differences between it and a plot device. I think your question should be resolved by that. I might ETA to do some clarification on what I mean 'emotional impact'--because of course having or acquiring a disability can and really should have an impact on the emotions of the characters involved, and ideally make the reader feel as well, but when people say those words it all-too-often means something like "Timmy's fallen down the well, oh no!" or "She dies, after giving birth, of a broken heart!"
